Let's be real: snacking is one of our favorite hobbies on the planet.
And while some may think a vegan diet is, well...limited, we're here to prove the naysayers wrong! Below we've shared a few of our favorite vegan superfoods for a power punch of nutrients. Oh, and they're totally foodie-approved!
Vegan Superfoods for the Free-Spirited Snacker
1) Hemp Seeds
Truth be told, any snack that can satisfy our hunger and tastes great is a win in our book. Which is exactly why hemp seeds are firmly planted at the top of our list. Rich in omega fatty acids, low in carbs, and packing 10 grams of protein in just a few spoonfuls, hemp seeds definitely fit the bill. Try adding them to organic greek yogurt, or even sprinkled over a salad as a tasty topper.
A blue-green algae loaded with anti-aging and anti-bacterial properties, spirulina is as nutritious as it gets. Now, full disclosure: in our humble opinion...it's not the tastiest thing you'll ever consume. BUT with a little dressing up, spirulina can become totally delicious. Check out our super easy recipe below:
Detoxifying Banana Spirulina Smoothie:
1 ripe banana
2 tbsp Manuka Honey (or any variety that suits your fancy)
1/2 cup organic coconut milk
1 cup ice
2 tbsp spirulina
* Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend for 1-2 minutes.
3) Goji Berries
When your sweet tooth lurks out of the dark shadows to drag you down to sugar town, goji berries have got your back. And while they taste like the sweet treat you've been craving, they're also super nutritious. In fact, just a small handful of goji berries provides almost 10 percent of your daily requirement for protein. Not bad for a berry!
4) Chia Seeds
Like hemp seeds, chia seeds pack a powerful nutritional bang considering their tiny size. In fact, two spoonfuls of chia seeds contain nearly six times as much iron as spinach, 11 gram of fiber, and 77mg of calcium (18% of your daily value). Even better? They can be added to nearly anything. Try pairing them with an acai bowl, oatmeal, or even guacamole.
5) Sprouted Nuts
We all know nuts are a great on-the-go snack, so why switch to sprouted? Let us count the ways...
First, sprouting is the process of soaking nuts, grains, seeds or beans for a period of several hours or days. This process works to break down chemicals known as "enzyme inhibitors" which prevent important vitamins and minerals from being fully absorbed. Sprouting, on the other hand, removes these chemicals, making the nutrients more bioavailable. As a result, sprouted foods are easily digestible, and much higher in fiber, protein, and antioxidants.
You can purchase sprouted nuts at virtually any health food store, or stay tuned for a full tutorial on DIY sprouting!
6) Coconut Chips
Known for their versatility in cuisine across the world, coconuts are a delicious addition to your superfood snack list. Health benefits include increased immunity, glowing skin, hormonal balance and improved brain function, to name a few. Even better? One of our favorite takes on the tropical fruit can literally be whipped up in less than 10 minutes.
Cinnamon Sugar Coconut Chips:
2 cups organic coconut flakes
1 tbsp coconut sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp Himalayan sea salt
* Preheat oven to 375 degrees
* Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl
* Spread mixture evenly onto baking sheet
* Bake for 5-10 minutes, or until chips are golden brown
